Teaching with Small Boats Conference

March 12-15, 2010

Alexandria Seaport Foundation
Alexandria, Virginia

The Teaching with Small Boats Conference was a tremendous success. We were able to bring together most of the groups in North America who use small boats as teaching tools. It was the first time in 17 years that this group of organizations has gotten together.

We had 89 participants from 63 programs. The 63 programs represented consist of 53 established programs and 10 start-ups who:

* Serve 27,000 learners;
* Reach their stated program goals with 18,600 of them;
* Have combined budgets of almost $14,000,000;
* Employ 263 staff;
* Utilize 990 volunteers who contribute approximately 100,000 hours.

That’s a pretty substantial group!

The Conference had three goals- all were achieved.

  • Goal #1-- Creating a catalog of activities and compiling program data of the participating groups.
  • Goal #2-- Compiling Best Practices for: Program Design and Implementation, Integration of Academics into Programs, Measuring and Evaluating Programs, and Development/ Fundraising.
  • Goal #3-- Determining how the Conference participants could work together moving forward.

All of the groups agreed to form an alliance and work together in the future. We established a temporary Steering Committee, with working groups for Program Design, Academics, Measurement, Development/Fundraising and Professional Development. Attached is a file with the groups and their members.

This website is a first step. Check back as it gets built with the presentations and results of the Conference.
